Lothar Matthäus demonstratively defended Max Eberl after renewed fan abuse. “I want to stand up for Max Eberl,” said the Sky expert (62) to the German Press Agency before RB Leipzig’s top game against FC Bayern Munich on Saturday (6.30 p.m./Sky).
The Leipzig manager was once again attacked by supporters of his former club Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend. When RB made it 1-0, a banner could be seen for a short time in the north curve of Borussia Park. “First I’ll get a health certificate, then I’ll continue counting the certificate by certificate,” it read. Eberl was depicted as a pig on a banner. According to his own statement, Eberl resigned as Gladbach’s sports director at the end of January 2022.

Matthäus is not surprised that Eberl has recently been increasingly linked with a move to FC Bayern. “Bayern Munich wants good people in the most important positions. That’s why it has to be an issue,” says Matthäus. However, he doesn’t expect to say goodbye to Leipzig any time soon. “I assume that he is someone who won’t change clubs so quickly.”
