Since 2005, Christian Horner of Red Bull belongs to the exclusive circle of formula 1 team bosses. 15 years in which he had to deal with different personalities and in which he has experienced some funny anecdotes. On the one or the other of them he talks in the current issue of ‘F1 Unscripted’ with his former driver David Coulthard.
For example, about his encounters with the former McLaren team boss Ron Dennis, in front of the Horner “great respect” and he “has felt in some Meetings” as “really intimidating”: “this veins had on the neck, which always came out when he was angry! He was extremely passionate.”
And quite different than the former Benetton and Renault team boss Flavio Briatore. Horner recalls with a Grin in the (currently bearded) face: “There could have been no more different personalities. But as they drove in 2005/06 against each other for the world Cup, were both about equally successful, with very, very different styles.”
For Horner, just 31 years young, he came to the piranha of the formula-1 basin team leaders was kicked, it was a unique opportunity to the dazzling personalities up close to observe: “I remember that I thought: so There is no predetermined path to success.”
“Because, on the one hand, Ron, whose folders were always spotless. Martin Whitmarsh has turned into the Meetings, always the pages for him, and give him the filler open on the table. On the other hand Flavio is glued, to the half of his lunch on the T-Shirt.”
“he was in the Show and the Business. The engineers were Criminals. Rock’n’Roll and fun and the Show,” laughs Horner about Briatore – without the successes of small talk: “Both have achieved Incredible, although you are the complete anti thesis were to each other.”
“I saw the two and thought to myself: There is not one right way, so I have to find my own way with my own methods and see how that works. And my way,” says Horner, “is neither Flavio nor Ron.”
