At least ten people were killed when a church roof collapsed in northeastern Mexico. Another 60 people were injured when the roof of the Santa Cruz church collapsed in the city of Ciudad Madero, security authorities in Tamaulipas state said on Monday. 23 injured people were treated in hospitals, two were seriously injured.
At the time of the accident, numerous people were celebrating a baptism in the church. “We regret the painful loss of those who attended the baptism of their children,” said a statement from the Diocese of Tampico. “We pray to God that they may rest in peace and their families find comfort.”
Security forces, believers and residents could be seen on television trying to rescue survivors from the rubble. According to the authorities, soldiers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics were involved in the rescue operation.
“I deeply regret what happened at the Church of Santa Cruz in Ciudad Madero,” Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villareal wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “My solidarity goes out to the families who have lost loved ones.”
