In view of the high number of refugees, FDP leader Christian Lindner has once again called for more control over migration. “We will remain a cosmopolitan country if we control access to our country,” said the Federal Finance Minister on Friday at the end of the Bavarian FDP’s election campaign in Munich.

“In Germany we make it too difficult for those who we urgently need as smart minds and hard-working hands in our job market,” emphasized Lindner. At the same time, it makes it easy for those “who have immigrated illegally to our welfare state in order to benefit from it.” He again advocated for benefits in kind instead of cash benefits in order to reduce the incentives to come to Germany.

However, Lindner did not rule out more money from the federal government to overcome the challenges of migration policy. “Yes, the consequences of migration must be co-financed by the federal government. I don’t want to rule out the possibility that the federal government will continue to be involved. We see a responsibility for the entire state.” But Lindner also added: “Illegal immigration is not about how it is financed. Illegal immigration is not about financing, but about reduction.”
