Darrell and Darren Roberts are twins. In 24 years, they have never left the Uk. However, the one and the other may be expelled, each to a different country where they do not know anybody. As recounted in the Guardian, Darrell received an e-mail indicating to him that the ministry of the Interior plans to send to the Dominican Republic after a conviction of a jail sentence, even if he has no relationship with this country. According to him, it is a mistake, his father being born in Dominica, another island in the Caribbean. His twin brother, him, out of his own prison sentence, has been notified of the desire of the ministry to drive to Granada, where their mother was born.

both had been entrusted at the age of 13 years to social services, to the death of their mother, quickly followed by that of their uncle who was taking care of them. They no longer have contact with their father for several decades. None of the two parents had british citizenship and, according to the twins, the social services were negligent in their childhood when it came time to do the legwork for their naturalization.

Victims of the negligence of the administration

The prison guards, members of the administration that they encounter, they strive to remind themselves that they are born on british soil, they have done their entire education. Nothing can be done. Some scoff and do not seem to believe them, others say they can’t act. Darren also has a girlfriend and a son of 5 years old, born on british soil.

The little sister of the two brothers is in despair. “The difficult situation of Darrell and Darren illustrates the systemic racism of the british institutions,” she explains. During their time in care, the social services have neglected their duty to naturalize. Rip them to their home would mean to separate from the only family they have”.

Andrew Sperling, the lawyer for the prison where is Darrell critical also to the situation of the twins. “It is so cruel and unfair to see that two young men who have spent most of their childhood with social services can be treated as well. It takes a lot for me to shock, but I find this case particularly shocking.” As the ministry of the Interior, in one of the two cases, does not seem to have grasped that Dominica and the Dominican Republic are two different countries, one of which has never had any relationship with the young man that we would like to send.
