Cheers and Slainte! 447 whiskey fans set the record for the largest online tasting in history. In total, members of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society from 18 countries and across multiple time zones took part in the event in honor of the whiskey club’s 40th birthday. People in New York enjoyed a “dram,” as a good shot of whiskey is called, for breakfast. For those who tuned in from Australia, it was a midnight drink.

All participants simultaneously drank the same three whiskeys during a video conference – to do this, they had to have their computer cameras on the whole time and no one else could be seen near them. A Guinness World Records referee supervised the record attempt.

The online tasting is a great example of the society’s work to bring together whiskey lovers around the world, said Madeleine Schmoll of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society. The club was founded in 1983 in the Scottish capital Edinburgh and claims to be the largest of its kind in the world with almost 40,000 members in 20 countries. The editor-in-chief of the trade journal “Whisky Magazine”, Christopher Coates, emphasized that such an event would have been impossible just a few years ago. “This is a testament to how technology and whiskey can bring people together.”
