This is a historic victory. Fabio Quartararo has won on Sunday 19 July the Grand Prix of Spain MotoGP, his first success in the premier class of sports bike and the first victory for a French rider since Regis Laconi in 1999. The Nice beat Spaniard Maverick Vinales, also on a Yamaha, at the end of a spectacular race marked by a fantastic rising of the sixfold world champion, Spanish Marc Marquez (Honda) who has finished, however, fall heavily.
“P…, this is the most beautiful day of my life !” exclaimed Quartararo after arrival. It is, at the age of 21, the fourth French rider to win a race in the premier class after George Monneret in 1954, Christian Sarron in 1985 and Régis Laconi in 1999. Party in pole position, Quartararo has had to yield ground in the first laps of the race, especially in the face of Marquez and Vinales. But a mistake from Marquez, who is out in the gravel, and then a Vinales have enabled him to take the head to no longer leave it up to the finish. Mark then embarked on a fantastic comeback that brought him back from the 18th to the 3rd place before committing a new error and falling back after an impressive capriole, in which he rose visibly very sore.
