WACO, Texas — Abram and Dillon Doyle made a formidable running duo for Baylor. This gave future Big 12 foes and 19th-ranked BYU a peek at what the Cougars might face in their new conference.

Smith ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Doyle, a linebacker and part time fullback, scored both of his offensive touches in Saturday’s 38-24 victory.

Kilani Sitake, BYU coach, stated that it was not the best game. “We were physically out-physicaled today so that was difficult to accept. … Really did a gut-check.

Baylor (6-1), led by three points at the end of the third quarter, when Doyle caught a 2-yard TD from Gerry Bohanon. Smith ran for 7 yards about 3 1/2 minutes later, making it 31-14 after TJ Franklin’s sack which forced Jaren Hall to fumble.

“This was a normal game… Dave Aranda, second-year Bears coach, said that he believes this is a significant achievement for the team. That’s a huge step in the right direction. “

BYU (5-2), accepted last month an invitation to the Big 12 Conference, which will begin in 2023. After a 5-0 start, which included three wins over Pac-12 opponents and a peak at No. 10 in the AP Top 25.

Jeff Grimes, former offensive coordinator at BYU, is currently in his first year in the role. The team had 534 yards total. Grimes met with several former players at pregame warmups. His current team won its fourth 500-yard contest this season.

Smith had 27 carries and Baylor led at halftime. He scored a 9 yard touchdown to put Baylor ahead. However, a defender stopped Smith short of the end zone. Then another defender hit him, and he bullied his way in for the score.

Aranda stated that there is a distinction between dudes who look for openings, or look for doors, and those who just want to run through walls. Your offense can be transformed if you have someone who is willing to run through a wall and the ability to do so.

Bohanon completed 18 out of 28 passes for 231 yard with the TD pass to Doyle. He also ran 2 yards late in the first quarter for a score. Fourth-year junior and starter , Bohanon threw his fourth interception. It was his 153rd attempt. The Bears took fourth-and-4 at the 6, early in the game, but it was still scoreless.
