This beloved channel takes viewers from one game to the next, keeping them updated on all the action in the country.
Problem is, there are obvious differences between basketball and football. This means that every possession in basketball is a scoring opportunity in basketball. The Starters made fun of this fact years ago with the help Ernie Johnson. There is no way to see every bucket in every game the same way RedZone promises every touchdown and field goal from every NFL Sunday game.
There is an audience for a channel that can bounce back and forth between close games late at night, or even put a few games on one screen when it’s tight late at night. According to Turner and the NBA, they have been considering this idea as well. On Monday night, Jared Greenberg, Steve Smith, and NBA CrunchTime will launch on the NBA App at 8:30 p.m. ET as the first games get into the fourth quarter.
It will be fascinating to see how it works. However, there is a chance that this could grow to become something bigger for the NBA, especially on Mondays and Wednesdays, when there are often 10 or even more games on the same night. This is a NBA app exclusive. However, if it succeeds, it may be adopted by NBATV or included in the League Pass package.
We’ll wait to see how it goes for an eight-game game night, in which each game will have been tipped off at 8 p.m. ET.
