Elon Musk was invited to testify to the MPs about his planned takeover of Twitter, the social media giant.
Julian Knight, Conservative MP, asked the billionaire entrepreneur for a meeting with a parliamentary committee to discuss his plans and address any criticisms.
Chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (DCMS), Mr Knight stated that they are interested in learning more about verification plans for all platforms users.
In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk agreed to a deal worth PS34.5 billion with the Twitter board. This deal is expected to be finalized later in the year.
At the time of the agreement, he stated that he was looking forward “to improving the product with new features”.
Musk suggested that he might consider introducing a charge for commercial users to the social media platform.
“Twitter will always be free for casual users, but maybe a slight cost for commercial/government users,” he said in a tweet.
In a letter addressed to Mr Musk, Mr Knight stated that the committee supports Mr Musk’s proposal to eliminate all spam accounts and automated robots from the platform.
“My committee has taken note of your proposal to acquire Twitter. We are very interested in what you have to offer.” He wrote that your plan to provide verification for all users echos our calls for the UK Government in the proposed legislation. This will help restore trust in digital platforms and platforms to the UK public.
“I would like to therefore invite you to speak before the committee and to discuss your ideas in greater detail.
“I am aware that you expressed your desire for critics to remain on Twitter, and this could present an opportunity for you to address any criticisms in public.”
Some users raised concerns that Musk’s support for absolute free speech might lead to a loosening content restriction. Mr Knight said the committee wanted to know how Tesla chief would balance free speech with protecting users from “online harms”.
He said, “Mr Musk will have the opportunity to present his ideas for Twitter in greater detail before the committee. We look forward to welcoming him.”
