On Tuesday night, the 22-year-old southpaw went without a run or hit in a 12-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Angel Stadium.

“It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. I didn’t think it would ever happen,” said Detmers, whose remarks were reported by the major leagues website.

The first-round pick (10th overall) in the 2020 draft had maintained an ERA of 6.33 in his first 10 appearances on the mound in the big league. Before the game, Angels manager Joe Maddon was even asked about the possibility of Detmers being demoted to the minors.

“It changes a life for a young man and a major league baseball player. I hope he can build on that, because he can. This is how he should always throw and this is how he should look more often,” Maddon said after his young gunner’s feat.

Facing the Rays, Detmers passed just two batters in the mitt and gave up just one free pass. He totaled 108 pitches and had 68 catches in nine innings of work. It was the first time he pitched a full game since his time in college baseball with Louisville.

The Illinois native is the 25th freshman to complete a game without a run or hit and the second Angels rookie to accomplish the feat since Bo Belinsky in 1962. It’s also the 12th game without a run or hit sure about the history of the Los Angeles organization.
