From Tuesday, May 28, new 100 and 200 euro banknotes will be put into circulation in the countries of the euro zone, in order to fight against counterfeit banknotes.
[Updated May 28, 2019 at 5:55 p.m.] Your denominations of 100 and 200 euros are changing heads, a first since 2002. In total, 2.3 billion 100 euro notes as well as 700 million 200 euro notes have been in circulation from Tuesday 28 May by the European Central Bank. Stated objective, to fight against the falsification and counterfeiting of banknotes. Rest assured, if you still have old denominations, they are still valid.
These new banknotes complement and complete the series of new banknotes of 5, 10, 20 and 50 euros, baptized “Europe”, named after a character from Greek mythology and initiated in 2013. Unsurprisingly, the new banknotes retain their colors and the dominant architecture. However, you will notice some changes.
The new denomination changes height, to adopt that of the 50 euro note. It nevertheless retains its initial length, its green color as well as its Baroque and Rococo architectural style. Several signs have been added: the figure at the bottom left is now in emerald green. It can change color when tilted thanks to an inimitable ink that is not sold commercially. Another novelty, a metal band has appeared on the right side of the banknote. You can see the portrait of Princess Europe as well as the euro symbol. In the image of the European Central Bank below, the old banknote is located below the new one.
The 100 euro banknote is one of the most widely used banknotes (23% of the total value of denominations in circulation in the euro zone). As a reminder, 68% of transactions are still made in cash in France. Each year, several hundred thousand counterfeit banknotes are seized by authorities.
Like the 100 euro note, it retains its dominant color: yellow. The architectural style of the 19th century also remains predominant. The 200 euro note benefits, like all the other banknotes, from new signs such as the metal band and the number 200 printed in emerald green, as you can see in the image below.
If you still have tickets from the old series, rest assured, you can still pay for your purchases with them. They will be gradually replaced by new ones. For the 500 euro banknotes, be aware that the production of this one has been stopped. However, you can still use them.
