While not the night’s favorite, Coda won the Best Picture Oscar. This remake of The Aries Family, available to stream on Apple TV, also won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur.

On the acting side, the Oscars went to Will Smith for The Williams Method (just minutes after he punched out Chris Rock after a questionable joke about his wife’s baldness) and Jessica Chastain for her role as the film’s evangelist In the Eyes by Tammy Faye (on Disney). Finally, Ariana DeBose won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story. In addition to winning the same award for the same role as Rita Moreno 60 years later, she becomes the first Latin American and openly queer actress to win an acting award.

Jane Campion won the Best Director Oscar, the only award given to The Power of the Dog, which was the favorite film with 12 nominations. In terms of number of awards, Dune came out on top, taking home six statuettes: Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Set Design, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects.
