A Champions League Sevilla spoils Suárez’s farewell
Lopetegui’s men crush Atlético’s illusion for second place after drawing in the 85th minute
MADRID, 15 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Sevilla took a very valuable point this Sunday against Atlético de Madrid (1-1), in the penultimate round of the Santander League, thanks to a goal by Youssef En-Nesyri with five minutes to go and certified their participation in the next edition of the Champions League.
Julen Lopetegui’s team was far from the level it has offered this season and it shows that it has reached the decisive stretch of the course just short of gasoline, but it was able to sink its teeth into an Atleti that added more bittersweet sauce to this season that has had too many ups and downs .
En-Nesyri emerged as the hero of the Nervionenses with an impeccable header from a pass from Óliver Torres, a former mattress player, to beat Oblak with power. He had already tried it minutes before and ran into the crosshead in another good action at the far post. This time, at 85′, he did hit the bottom of the net.
And that the game was almost always controlled by Diego Pablo Simeone’s men, who dominated without problems and generated more chances than their rival. The first, a header from Reinildo after a lateral foul, and the second a whiplash from outside the Kondogbia area that did not come to fruition.
The Andalusians only tried it in the first half with a shot from En-Nesyri that forced the stretch of the mattress goalkeeper, just five minutes before it became 1-0 after a corner taken by Carrasco. The Uruguayan Giménez appeared in the foreground and managed to beat Bono violently.
The goal seemed the prelude to an unparalleled athletic celebration, straightening out the season at the end with qualification for the Champions League, the rojiblancos were still fighting for second position -although they depended on Barça- and it could not be despite the good start of the final act. De Paul was close to second with a shot from the edge of the box.
However, Atlético let the train escape and Sevilla, who smelled blood, dedicated themselves to centering balls into the heart of the area in search of their reference man for heights. The second En-Nesyri appeared to water down the farewell of Luis Suárez and Héctor Herrera; and overflow the illusion in Nervión.
