The Minister of Social Rights and leader of Podemos has heated up the climate within the Government a little more by demanding that the King Emeritus that the only reason for his return to Spain is to “be accountable to justice. The fact that it is inviolable, argues Ione Belarra, “humiliates our democracy.”
The minority partner of the Government had limited its demands until now to Juan Carlos de Borbón giving explanations, but in the last few hours it has raised the bar to demand his appearance in court. The claim of the purple party is a toast to the sun because the former head of state does not have any open cause in Spain, although he introduces a new element of instability in the coalition government.
The PSOE limits the return to a private issue, although it also maintains that the king emeritus must give public explanations for his conduct. The socialists try to dissociate the behavior of the former head of state from the management of Felipe VI for the sake of the modernization and transparency of the Crown.
Belarra’s speech was not shared by the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, who insisted this Thursday that the emeritus “must be held accountable to the public” for his “obviously questionable” conduct if he wants to work for the “dignification” of the monarchical institution.
