Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged that his government is “very concerned” about the shortage of infant formula that is being felt across the border and beginning to have an impact in Canada.

“We are watching carefully what is happening in the United States to ensure that there is not too much impact in Canada, but also to see if we need to do similar things to ensure sources of supply for families,” assured the Prime Minister during a press briefing in Sept-Îles, on the North Shore, on Friday.

Some repercussions are already beginning to be felt on Canadian soil, according to Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief administrator of the Public Health Agency of Canada.

However, he maintained that Health Canada is working closely with the United States and manufacturers to avoid a shortage of these infant formulas designed for children who suffer from food allergies.

“I know that the various Canadian agencies are looking carefully at how to ensure a safe and certain supply for the families who depend on it,” confirmed Mr. Trudeau.

Health Canada had issued an advisory on Thursday regarding two infant formula products that are out of stock in the country.

“There are two types of formula for babies with food allergies: those that are heavily hydrolyzed and those that are made from amino acids. In some provinces, the supply of these products does not meet the demand”, is it possible to read in the notice.

Remember that this shortage was created after the closure of the Abbott Laboratories factory in the United States last February due to the discovery of four bacterial infections in babies who had consumed products from this factory.
