This law takes effect immediately and is based on one that was passed in Texas. But it goes further.
On Wednesday, Oklahoma’s Republican governor signed into law a bill banning almost all abortions in the state. It takes effect immediately after his signature. This is even before a Supreme Court ruling expected in the next few weeks, which could overturn Roe v. Wade’s landmark case that established a right for abortion.
This bill is inspired by Texas’ SB 8 which allows private citizens to act as its enforcers. It has been difficult to challenge in court. It goes further than Texas’ SB 8, banning abortion after fertilization, rather than when a heartbeat is detected.
The bill, which is at least the third restrictive and sometimes redundant ban on abortion to be signed by the governor in the last two month, makes the state one of the most hostile to abortion in America.
