The Champions League final returns and with it, the madness of football fans will travel to the Stade de France in Paris. This year, Real Madrid and Liverpool will be the two teams that will play for European glory in the last match of the Champions League, where the winner of the European title will be decided.
The arrival of Real Madrid in the final is nothing more than an incentive for the Spanish fans. In our country we have not been able to see any club in the final of the highest European competition since 2018, while in the last three years, four English teams have managed to reach the final.
This trophy fell last year in the hands of one of them who, however, will not be able to revalidate after being defeated in the elimination rounds by one of the finalists.
But who was the winner of the 2021 Champions League?
The 2020/21 final was one of the most anticipated after an intense break in the world of football due to the pandemic. A competition that took two of the most successful English teams in recent years to the final: Manchester City and Chelsea.
The ‘sky blues’, commanded by the Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, had been sweeping the national competition for years, after winning three League titles in just four years. For their part, Chelsea had based their attack on an intense defense that allowed them to go on the counterattack to surprise their rivals.
Two intense clubs that ended up meeting at the Estadio do Dragão, in Porto, to crown one of the two as champions of the UEFA Champions League in 2021.
However, only one can win and so did Chelsea, who ended up proclaiming themselves the winner thanks to a goal from German footballer Kai Havertz. The midfielder put the London club ahead in the final stretch of the first half (minute 42) and, despite City’s attempts to add a goal to the scoreboard, the team failed.
Thus, the English, led by coach Thomas Tuchel, ended up taking home what was their second Champions League in the club’s history. Just 10 years earlier, in 2012, the London club had beaten Bayern Munich to win their first title in Europe’s top competition.
Last year’s winner, however, failed to make it past the quarter-finals this season, where they were eliminated by one of the current finalists, Real Madrid, by 5-4 goals.
Now it will be the white club and Liverpool that will have to fight to win the title on May 28. Who will win?
