The Government of Ximo Puig in the Generalitat Valenciana has informed against modifying the law to allow families to choose classes in Spanish for their children in educational centers, a Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) that has nearly 40,000 signatures of support, four times more than necessary.
From the association Hablamos Español they have pointed out that it is an informative opinion that does not paralyze the processing of its proposal for the freedom of choice of the vehicular language, with an informative nature.
From this entity they had demanded a debate in the Valencian Parliament, for which they have the support of the PP, Ciudadanos and Vox, but the partners of the Consell (PSPV-PSOE, Compromís and Podemos) thus position themselves against changing the controversial Law of multilingualism.
The protest in front of the Autonomous Parliament by representatives of Hablemos Español so that it can be discussed has not changed the opinion of Ximo Puig’s government team. Nor, the demands presented by families in Castilian-speaking areas, for example, Orihuela, against the center’s linguistic projects, in which the aforementioned Plurilingualism Law is considered “contrary to law”.
However, the argument put forward again by the Generalitat insists, as it pointed out in the responses to several families who have denounced discrimination, as revealed by ABC, is that there are several Constitutional Court rulings that give the Administration the power to establish in what language is studied in each center and not the parents of the students.
This jurisprudence refers to litigation presented in Catalonia due to the linguistic conflict as well, although from Hablamos Español they reject that these judicial rulings can be interpreted as a guarantee so that no administration can impose one language or another.
Along the same lines is the Platform of Teachers for Linguistic Freedom, which also provides free legal advice to those affected and channels some of these complaints. In addition, they assure that in many educational centers these linguistic projects are applied without the mandatory support of two thirds of the members of the school council.
