The Popular, Ecological and Social Union (NUPES), led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, accuses the Ministry of the Interior of “manipulating” the results of the first round of the legislative elections that have profoundly transformed the national political landscape.

Manuel Bombard, official spokesman for NUPES, and Mélenchon’s confidant, declared: «Our party obtained 6,101,968 votes (26.8% of the national votes), but the Ministry of the Interior only attributes 5,836,202 to us. votes (25.7% of the national votes). With this manipulation, they want to present Macron’s party as the winner.”

Bombard does not explain the origin of its figures, which do not exactly coincide with the official results of the Ministry of the Interior, which announced a technical tie early Monday morning with a slight advantage for the ‘macronitas’.

According to official figures, 5,857,561 voters, 25.75% of the voters, gave Macron, his party and coalition, a slight advantage over the NUPES coalition, which would only have been voted for by 5,836,202 voters, the 25.66% of the voters.

That insignificant arithmetical difference has enormous symbolic importance. This is a new confrontation between Mélenchon, his party and coalition (extreme populist left), against Macron, his government, party and coalition, where reformists, liberals, centrists and conservatives coexist.
