The Urbania Sailing Team has finished the offshore regatta that opened the ORC World Championship in the waters of the Costa Smeralda, in Sardinia. The team, the only Spanish representative in Class A of the championship, has led the test for more than twenty miles, after a good start, but the fall of the wind has made it lose the advantage over the fleet.
With this good result, the Urbania Sailing Team is placed in the leading group of the general classification of Class A, with a fleet of 20 boats.
The skipper, Tomás Gasset, has been very satisfied with the work of the crew: “The team’s performance has been spectacular and it is a hopeful first day of regatta.
We have the whole week ahead of us and we are going to fight to be at the top.”
Iñaki Castañer, sports and tactical director of the team, explained the development of the high-altitude regatta, which began this Saturday at 11:25 in the morning and ended by crossing the imaginary finish line at 1:38 p.m. on Sunday 26 June: “It was a very nice and complete regatta in the famous Costa Smeralda sailing area. The route was really complex, with very different sections. More wind was expected than it finally was and that’s why it was quite hard. The first part of the regatta has gone very well for us because we have started very fast and we have positioned ourselves very well with respect to the entire fleet, unfortunately we have fallen into a lull and the regatta has started again after twenty miles going first. We are happy. It was a fifth place that I think we can improve on.”
Castañer is confident that he will climb even higher in the classification if he continues along the same lines: “I think we have managed to get the most out of the boat and the crew has worked one hundred percent during the more than 26 hours that the regatta has lasted. I am very happy with everyone’s attitude. This has only just begun and we are very excited.”
The Urbania Sailing Team thus adds five points in the classification, provisionally led by the Argentine boat From now on, from which only 37 minutes have separated it in the final calculation after more than a day of regatta.
