Whether in a shopping center, train station or hardware store: there are several thousand traffic accidents in parking lots in Rhineland-Palatinate every year. The trend is slightly upward, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior in Mainz. People are often seriously injured in the clashes. For example, a 56-year-old woman was hit and killed in Alzey at the end of August. A 71-year-old driver who wanted to leave the parking lot had caught the pedestrian turning her car on the street.
In the first half of 2022, 9351 accidents in parking lots were registered nationwide. Two people were seriously injured and 40 slightly injured. For comparison: In the entire previous year, 16,991 accidents with 9 seriously injured and 74 slightly injured people were recorded. In 2020 there were still 17,586 accidents with 7 serious and 71 minor injuries. In the previous year, 5 people were seriously injured and 76 slightly injured in 21,328 parking lot accidents. There were no deaths in the three years.
