The cause of death of the man who barricaded himself armed from the police in his home in Vieritz for a day and a half at the weekend remains unclear. The man’s body was autopsied on Sunday and there were initial findings, said the spokesman for the Potsdam public prosecutor’s office, Christian-AlexanderNeu. However, it has not yet been conclusively clarified whether the man killed himself or was fatally hit by a police weapon.

The man exchanged fire several times with the police during the large-scale operation in Vieritz on Friday and Saturday. The police wanted to enforce a court order in the village in Brandenburg, which belongs to the municipality of Milower Land, and hand over a child to the youth welfare office. Special police units were also involved due to possible endangerment of children’s welfare. But it was not possible to get the child out of the house. Two men barricaded themselves there, and the child and his mother were also in the house. The mother and child were able to leave the house unharmed on Saturday night.

One of the men was arrested on Friday evening and taken into custody at the Wriezen Correctional Facility. He is accused of possessing a significant amount of cannabis and carrying dangerous items, said NEUEN. These should be weapons capable of firing. “But this still needs to be investigated,” emphasized the public prosecutor.
