Even when these two best-of compilations were released in 1973, they were more than just records. The Red and Blue Double Albums, as they were soon called, were monuments, memorials. The original titles already had something of a gravestone about them: 1962 – 1966 and 1967 – 1970. The years not only covered the time in which the Beatles made music history in the recording studio, they also represented the spirit of optimism of the Sixties. With this look back at the best songs from the best band in the world, the sixties were finally buried.

Now they have been exhumed with great pomp.
