With Marco Rose, RB Leipzig has just signed a new coach, now the new sports director is to follow. Preferred candidate Max Eberl has already agreed to RB, but an agreement with Eberl’s current club Borussia Mönchengladbach is still pending. RB managing director Oliver Mintzlaff now gave an insight into the status of the negotiations.
In the Bild TV show, Mintzlaff explained: “Now we’re at a point that we want Max and I’ll be talking to Mr. Schippers from Gladbach in the next few days.” The RB boss continues: “Then we’ll see if we can get together.” (Quoted via Kicker)
The Bild newspaper reported almost a week ago that the Gladbachers would demand five million euros plus bonuses for Eberl. The first Leipzig offer is said to have amounted to only 500,000 euros. If the two clubs don’t reach an agreement, “we’ll certainly have to look for another alternative,” said Mintzlaff.
Eberl’s contract with Borussia runs until 2026. The 48-year-old resigned from his position as sports director in January due to mental exhaustion and had agreed with the foals to let the contract rest until further notice. While Eberl recovers from his health problems, he does not receive a salary from Borussia. At RB, the long-standing Gladbach manager would fill a gap that has existed for over a year. His potential predecessor Markus Krösche moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in June 2021.
As Mintzlaff revealed on Bild TV, Eberl’s interest in Leipzig was not initially met with approval. Accordingly, the ex-professional rejected a first request from Saxony after the DFB Cup victory at the end of May.
“Nevertheless, I didn’t give up, knowing full well that the door wasn’t even ajar,” continued Mintzlaff. “I stayed a bit stubborn, and at some point the gap widened, so I accelerated more.”
In view of these intensive efforts, it seems unrealistic that the deal between RB and Eberl could still burst. If Gladbach continues to insist on a high million transfer fee, the Red Bulls will probably respond to the demands.
