National coach Hansi Flick admitted his own mistakes when he left FC Bayern. The 57-year-old is now critically questioning his behavior towards those responsible for Hasan Salihamidzic, Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as well as his dealings with the team.
Flick explained to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “I do think that I would do one or the other thing differently now. Of course, a conversation would have been good to sit at the table with one or the other to address things the way they do are, or how I perceived them, and to let everyone have their say.”
At the end of his term there were several disagreements with Hasan Salihamidzic, Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “It’s always good to talk about it again to clear things up,” said the native of Heidelberg. With Salihamidzic, Flick continued, “there has now been a rapprochement. I’m very pleased that we were able to clear up a few things.”
“Sometimes,” Flick admitted, “I do ask myself: Why did it come to this?” He had “a great team of coaches, outstanding players [and] a great team” with the record champions. “I wasn’t exhausted either, it was exactly what I enjoy,” said the 2020 Champions League winner, summing up his “very special time” at Bayern.
In an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Flick also addressed mistakes in dealing with his players at the time. “At the end of my Bayern time there were moments when I took a wrong turn,” he said. “During this phase, I couldn’t just breathe everything away. And that’s why there were certainly moments when I was unfair to the team.”
