Sometimes highly unusual encounters lead to the right diagnosis. This is what happened to an eight-year-old boy who came to my office with his parents for the first time some time ago. I learned his story: Even as a baby, he noticed that he hardly wanted to drink and only slowly gained weight. Later he began to sit and walk, and he found it difficult to speak. The doctors soon noticed that the boy was hard of hearing. At school he could hardly concentrate and was overwhelmed with the subject matter, which bothered the sensitive, friendly boy.
