For four months, Mao Zedong explored his country, from the south up to the steppes of Manchuria, down the Yangtze on a steamer, it was a journey back and forth through the Middle Kingdom in the ninth year of the Red rule. He visits model communities, appraises selected irrigation projects, and the 64-year-old feels the revolutionary élan of his youth again. The passionate swimmer even dares to swim twice in the winter-cold waters of the Yong River in the south of the country.
