On Wednesday afternoon, a 60-year-old pilot and another passenger took off from the regional airport in Mannheim. Shortly after takeoff from Mannheim City Airport, the 60-year-old reported technical problems and attempted an emergency landing in an industrial area in Neckarau. The plane touched one of the power poles of the railway’s overhead lines. This caused the light aircraft to tilt and crash onto the road. Both passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The plane suffered damage of around 150,000 euros.
According to the police, due to the damage to the overhead line mast, there may be disruptions on the railway line between Mannheim-Neckarau and Mannheim city center. The ultralight aircraft was recovered and confiscated. The criminal police are investigating the cause of the crash.
