British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has come under renewed pressure for breaching safety regulations and her handling of the high number of boat migrants in the English Channel.

The conservative politician, who initially resigned almost two weeks ago because of the disclosure of secret documents to unauthorized persons, admitted on Monday that she had forwarded emails from her professional to her private address in six cases.

Braverman’s resignation hastened the fall of former Prime Minister Liz Truss. Despite breaking safety regulations, Braverman was reappointed to office shortly afterwards by the new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. She is considered controversial, especially because of her tough stance against migrants.

Criticism for location in overcrowded accommodation

In particular, the situation in a completely overcrowded accommodation for the initial reception of migrants in the county of Kent caused new criticism of the Home Secretary. Braverman’s Conservative Party MP Roger Gale told BBC Radio 4 that the government may have caused the situation on purpose. In the meantime, 4,000 migrants are accommodated in the accommodation designed for 1,600 people because the government had refused to book enough rooms in hotels.

Braverman rejected the allegations in Parliament and accused the opposition of political games. “People in Britain have a right to know who is serious about stopping the invasion on our southern coast and who is not,” she said. By far not all migrants are refugees in need.

Braverman had declared war on the illegal entry of people in small boats across the English Channel. This year alone, almost 40,000 people made it to Great Britain this way – significantly more than in the entire previous year. She wanted to comment on the criticism in Parliament on Monday.
