The number of deaths recorded in the course of the Ebola outbreak in East African Uganda has risen to 53, according to official figures. The Ugandan Ministry of Health announced that a total of 135 infections have now been recorded. The first dead – a 24-year-old – was registered at the end of September.

The government announced on Tuesday that it would close the country’s schools on November 25 to curb the further spread of the virus. According to plan, the holidays did not start until December 9th.

Uganda has experienced several outbreaks since a major Ebola outbreak in northern Uganda in 2000 that killed over 200 people and infected hundreds more. Just last month, Uganda’s neighboring country Congo reported another Ebola outbreak.
