A tax officer in northern France was stabbed to death by an antiques dealer during a company audit. Budget Minister Gabriel Attal informed the Senate in Paris on Monday evening about the attack and spoke of a drama. “This man was just doing his job, like every day.”

The officer visited the dealer in the village of Bullecourt together with a colleague for the control, the newspaper “Le Parisien” reported on Tuesday, referring to the investigators. The dealer killed the officer with knife wounds and tied the colleague to a chair. He then killed himself with a gun.

The background to the violent attack is still unclear. The trader had bought a farmhouse in the village a while ago, where he was selling furniture and items from house clearances. The mayor described the man as helpful and unassuming, Le Parisien reported.
