The handball team of SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated their third win in the third preliminary round of the European League. On Tuesday, the north Germans prevailed against the previously unbeaten Icelanders from Valur Reykjavik with 37:32 (18:16) and extended their lead in group B. The best thrower in SG coach Maik Machulla’s team was Teitur Einarssson. The Icelander scored seven goals on his return home. Benedikt Oskarsson scored nine goals for the hosts.
Valur kept the game open in the first half. With the siren during the break, Flensburg pivot Simon Hald ensured that his team went into the dressing room with a two-goal lead. After the change of sides, the favored guests picked up the pace. At 25:20 (39th minute) the lead had increased to five goals for the first time.
The Icelanders, who were initially very agile, found it increasingly difficult to find gaps in the Flensburg defensive network. The SG celebrated a deserved victory without having to go to the limit. Flensburg’s next task is the Bundesliga home game against TVB Stuttgart on Sunday (4:05 p.m. / Sky). The European League continues on November 29 (6.45 p.m. / DAZN) with the Swedish representative Ystads IF.
