The former English national soccer player Gary Lineker modified his most famous saying after the German embarrassment at the World Cup in Qatar. “Football is a simple game. 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end the Germans always win,” he wrote on Twitter, adding: “If they make it through the group stage.” He also posted a video in which he and the two British ex-professionals Micah Richards and Alan Shearer burst out laughing.
Lineker was the record goalscorer with the English national team once in a World Cup semi-final, has long worked as a TV expert for various broadcasters and is known for his often not entirely serious jokes. Most recently, he judged Qatar’s capital Doha: “It’s like New York by the sea.” All World Cup stadiums of the controversial tournament are located in the greater Doha area.
