The motive sounds incredible: In a Mannheim hospital, a 72-year-old is said to have turned off the oxygen of a fellow patient. And only because she found the noise of the device annoying.
As the police and public prosecutor of the city of Mannheim announced, the two women were accommodated in the same room in the clinic. The insane act is said to have happened on Tuesday evening, November 29th. The pensioner first went to the 79-year-old’s bed at around 8 p.m. and turned off the main switch on the oxygen device, even though the elderly woman was dependent on the mechanical oxygen supply. The woman was said to be disturbed by the noise the device was making.
“Although the suspect was informed by the hospital staff that the oxygen supply was a vital measure, she is said to have switched off the device again around 9 p.m.,” says the press release.
The 79-year-old then had to be resuscitated. The woman is now out of danger, but still needs intensive care.
After the incident, the Mannheim public prosecutor obtained an arrest warrant against the 72-year-old at the Mannheim District Court. The next day she was brought before a detention and investigating judge of the district court. He carried out the arrest warrant as requested. The 72-year-old was then taken into custody for attempted manslaughter. “It’s not common for us either,” said a police spokeswoman about the incident. It was initially unclear whether the two women knew each other.
