After an early scare, Liverpool rallied to beat Villarreal 3-2 to reach its third Champions League final in five years on Tuesday. Villarreal seemed on the verge of another spectacular upset, opening a two goal lead in the first period to offset its 2-0 loss in England. However, the small Spanish club couldn’t keep up with Liverpool and the aggregate score was 5-2. Boulaye Dia, Francis Coquelin and Boulaye Dia put Villarreal ahead in the 41st minute. However, Fabinho, substitute Luis Diaz and Sadio mane scored in the second period to propel Liverpool into its first final since it won its sixth European title in 2019. The final will be played in Paris on May 28 against either Manchester City, a Premier League rival, or Real Madrid 13 times European champion. The final will be played in Madrid on Wednesday, with City trying to defend a 4-3 victory in the first leg in England. Liverpool still has hopes of winning a “quadruple”, which is capturing all four major trophies within one season.
