RALEIGH (N.C.) — Frederik Andrésen saved 33 shots for Carolina’s first shutout. The Hurricanes had their best six-game start ever in franchise history, beating the Boston Bruins 3-0 on Thursday night.
The Hurricanes are now 6-0-0, an opening streak that is one more than it was two seasons ago. This season, they have used Andersen as their goalie. He is the seventh NHL goalie to win six of the first six games of a single season.
Tony DeAngelo scored and Nino Niederreiter added a goal for the Hurricanes. Andrei Svechnikov also scored a goal.
After falling 4-1 to Florida Panthers the night before, the Bruins fell to an unbeaten team again.
21 shots were stopped by Jeremy Swayman, goalie for the Bruins.
SABRES 4, DUCKS 3 OT
ANAHEIM (Calif.) — Rasmus Asplund scored with 43.9 seconds remaining in overtime. This caps a wild evening that saw Buffalo blow a three-goal lead and rally to beat Anaheim.
Arttu Ruotsalainen and Zemgus Girgensons also scored for Sabres. They opened a four game West Coast trip with at least one point in seven of their seven games. Craig Anderson made 34 saves in a remarkable performance in goal.
Anthony Stolarz saved 25 shots and Simon Benoit tied the record with his first NHL goal. This was in the third period of the Ducks’ loss, their fifth consecutive. Troy Terry extended his points streak at six games by scoring a goal in Anaheim and Adam Henrique recorded his 200th career goal.
Ryan Getzlaf, Ducks captain, had an assist for 987th career points. This puts him one behind Teemu Seanne for Anaheim’s scoring record.
JETS 3, KINGS 2.
LOS ANGELES , Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals and Kyle Connor had three assists, as Winnipeg used a third period charge to defeat the Los Angeles Kings.
Andrew Copp scored a power-play goal to help the Jets win their fourth straight championship. In his season debut, Eric Comrie allowed 2 goals on 32 shots.
Rasmus Kupari scored and Adrian Kempe got the goal. Jonathan Quick saved 28 Kings. Los Angeles hasn’t won since beating Vegas Golden Knights in the opener. In their six previous games, the Kings are 0-5-1.
The Jets continued to push with their speed to take advantage Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, who was injured in a fall and Sean Walker was also lost due to a torn MCL and ACL sustained during their recent four game trip.
SHARKS 4 CANADIENS 0
SAN JOSE (Calif.) — Jake Allen saved 45, Mike Hoffman scored for the 3rd straight game, and Montreal defeated San Jose — its first victory there in almost 22 years.
Montreal broke a 10-game losing streak with the Sharks by scoring goals to Alexander Romanov, Brendan Gallagher and Brendan Gallagher. The Sharks looked flat in Montreal’s first home game after a five-game road trip that was encouraging.
Before Thursday, the Canadiens had lost their last road win against San Jose on Nov. 23, 1999. Since March 2015, they hadn’t beaten San Jose in any other location. Montreal, which was a Stanley Cup finalist last year, started the night at 1-6, and had been outscored 25-11.
Allen, 31, is the Canadiens’ No. 1 goalie. Carey Price was away for personal reasons so Allen became the No. 1 goalie. He recorded his 22nd career shutout.
Adin Hill saved 28 San Jose runs, going 0-4 on the power play. San Jose also missed some prime scoring opportunities in the opening game of a five-game homestand.
AVALANCHE 4, BLUES 3.
ST. LOUIS, — J.T. Compher scored two goals in Colorado’s victory over St. Louis to hand the Blues their first loss of the season.
Cale Makar and Nazem Kadri also scored for Avalanche. Darcy Kuemper had 15 saves.
St. Louis was represented by Brayden Schenn, Vladimir Tarasenko and Colton Parayko. Jordan Binnington, the Blues’ goalie, stopped 38 shots and was also given a rare 10-minute misconduct at the end of the second half. He was also joined by Kadri in a scrum following the net was taken off its moorings.
St. Louis was outshot 14-5 by the Avalanche in the first period, and 30-12 by the end of two periods.
FLYERS 2, CANUCKS 1.
VANCOUVER (BC) — Sean Couturier scored a goal and added an assist for Philadelphia in a fast start to defeat Vancouver.
James van Riemsdyk scored for the Flyers on the power play, while Claude Giroux had two assists. Quinn Hughes scored on behalf of the Canucks.
The night started quickly with three goals scored by the teams in seven minutes. Two of those were 1:53 apart.
Flyer goaltender Martin Jones, a Vancouver native, stopped 27 shots. Vancouver’s Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots.
With 1:20 remaining, the Canucks had a chance when Flyer defenseman Ivan Provoro got called for tripping. Vancouver was able to score two shots with Halak pulled.
KRAKEN 4, WILD 1.
SEATTLE , Haydn Fleury scored his first two goals of his career, while Brandon Tanev added six more to his season in an empty net as Seattle defeated Minnesota.
Seattle beat Minnesota for its second consecutive win.
Fleury scored in the final period to tie Seattle at 1-1. His wraparound goal in second gave the Kraken the lead. After Minnesota pulled Cam Talbot, Mark Giordano and Tanev both scored empty net goals.
Ryan Hartman scored his third goal for the season after a fantastic feed from Kirill Kaprizov in the first period. However, Minnesota was stopped by Philipp Grubauer’s stellar performance the rest of the game.
Grubauer was able to make 30 saves. This included a crucial stop by Kaprizov on a breakaway just before the end of the second period. Grubauer stopped Minnesota’s attempts to equalize in the third period with 16.
FLAMES 4, PENGUINS 0
PITTSBURGH, PA — Jacob Markstrom has stopped 45 shots to record his second shutout as Calgary beat Pittsburgh.
Markstrom’s second shutout in five NHL games and his 10th career win was his second. Markstrom is now in his 12th NHL season, and his second with the Flames. He has stopped 136 out of his last 137 shots.
Johnny Gaudreau scored the first goal of the period. Blake Coleman, Dillon Dube, and Milan Lucic also scored goals in the second to give Calgary victory in a five-game road trip. The Flames led for 234:05 and outscored the opposition 21-7 during the road trip.
Casey DeSmith made his first start since Oct. 14 and stopped 31 shots for Pittsburgh. After starting the season with five points, the Penguins have now lost two consecutive games.
LIGHTNING 4, COYOTES 1.
TAMPA BAY (FLA.) — Tampa Bay beat Arizona with two goals by Alex Killorn in the first period.
Before beating the Coyotes at Amalie Arena, the Lightning were 0-2-1.
Steven Stamkos scored a goal with an assist in the opening period. Andrei Vasilevskiy also scored, while Andrej Sustr also scored. Vasilevskiy was unable to win his shutout bid after Lawson Crouse scored with 7 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Ivan Prosvetov was a rookie goalie and played his first game since being recalled to Tucson of the American Hockey League. He finished his fourth NHL game with 23 saves for Arizona.
