The Spanish national player Jennifer Hermoso reported the suspended football association president Luis Rubiales because of the kiss after the World Cup final in Sydney, according to the responsible prosecutor. Criminal prosecution will now be initiated “as soon as possible,” the agency said, according to media reports. Hermoso testified before the ad.

After¬†Hermoso¬†the prosecutor’s office can decide whether to apply to a court of inquiry to initiate investigations into Rubiales. Experts estimate the 46-year-old former professional could face up to five years in prison if found guilty.

Rubiales hugged the national player during the award ceremony after winning the World Cup final in Sydney and kissed her on the mouth without being asked. After initial outrage, the Spanish Football Association released a statement in which the player officially agreed to the kiss. It later emerged that the association had put the words Hermoso in her mouth. Days later, the player released a statement with a footballers’ union calling for consequences for Rubiales. She unequivocally repeated the same thing on her Instagram account.

The 46-year-old Rubiales denied the blame, spoke of a “consensual kiss” and in turn launched a sweeping attack on his critics. Since then, Rubiales has refused to take any action of his own accord, even though Fifa suspended him as president of the association and a broad social alliance clearly opposed him. Even the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez demonstratively backed Hermoso. Most recently, the Spanish men’s national team declared solidarity.

National coach Jorge Vilda has now been fired because he is considered a close confidant of Rubiales and had initially declared his solidarity with him. The Spanish sports court is also investigating the matter against Rubiales.
