Ferrari set the pace at the start of practice for the Formula 1 spectacle in Mexico City. Carlos Sainz drove the fastest lap in the thin air at around 2200 meters above sea level.

Team-mate Charles Leclerc followed in second place, just 46 thousandths of a second behind. Third was Sergio Perez. The Mexican hopes to win his home race in the Red Bull and also wants to finish second in the World Championship standings. He is currently third, two points behind Leclerc.

The old and new world champion Max Verstappen came fourth in the first practice session. With another win, the Dutchman can become the sole record holder with the most wins in a season. The Red Bull star is currently tied with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, who, like Verstappen, won 13 times this year in 2004 and 2013. In training, Vettel came tenth in the Aston Martin, Mick Schumacher finished 14th in the Haas.
