Working at high-profile coaching stations has always brought with it personal challenges for Thomas Tuchel. “We always had to build a new home and did that every time. We were always out and about with the whole family,” said the FC Bayern Munich coach at the Ispo sporting goods trade fair. “Now my personal family situation has unfortunately changed a bit due to my divorce. Until then it was normal for us and very nice that we were always out and about as a family.”

It wasn’t always easy for his wife and daughters (12 and 14), said Tuchel. Before moving to Munich, he worked in London at Chelsea FC and Paris Saint-Germain. Before that he worked in Dortmund and Mainz.

“They had to leave their friends, their schools and start all over again. There are always two sides. But we always had a home where I could feel safe and calm and completely private,” reported Tuchel. “I’ve noticed more and more that I need certain places in an apartment or house. Where I can read a book or drink a cup of coffee.”

Tuchel also took time out between stops. “I thought before that I would travel around the world and visit every continent and everything and climb every mountain and learn golf and learn to play the piano and whatever. In the end it was basically like, taking the girls to and from school pick up,” said Tuchel. Everyday things would have calmed him down and done him good. He spent time with family and friends.

“I’m good at being lazy, I’m good at doing nothing when I don’t have a job,” Tuchel said. It’s nice to go on vacation when no one else can. However, as a professional coach you are in a privileged situation to be able to afford this.

Tuchel also revealed what he watches on TV. “Normally I only watch football. I also watch documentaries about football and general sports,” said the 50-year-old. You can also learn from other sports or understand a lot of things. But sometimes he also watches series. Succession was a favorite recently.
