The coaching duel between Thomas Tuchel and Christian Streich was a passionate one a long time ago.
“It’s difficult not to coach Christian emotionally because he coaches emotionally. We didn’t want to let anyone take the butter off our bread in recent years,” said new Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel before the Munich Cup quarter-finals in the evening (8.45 p.m. / ARD and Sky) at home against SC Freiburg. For Tuchel, after the 4-2 win against Borussia Dortmund in the league, it is the second game with FC Bayern – Streich, on the other hand, has been in Breisgau for an eternity.
“He has achieved absolute legend status there,” said Tuchel. You know each other from the youth teams. “Afterwards we always continued to discuss the game on the team bus. It was a great enrichment to talk to him about football,” said Tuchel and revealed: “Most of the time he smoked a cigarette.”
After Tuchel’s stays in France at Paris Saint-Germain and in England at Chelsea, there is now a reunion. And based on the statistics, one in which the winner can only be called Thomas Tuchel. Because in Munich, Freiburg played 23 times and lost 20 times. Streich recorded a draw, the other two draws were successful in the 1990s under Volker Finke.
One cannot rate the work of Christian Streich in Freiburg highly enough, said Tuchel. “But of course we are competitors on the sidelines, we will fight emotionally and be there for our teams.” If it were up to him, the title “Coach of the Year” could be awarded to Freiburg or Mainz every year. These two teams – like 1. FC Union Berlin – would outperform, said former Mainz coach Tuchel.
It is strange that only four days after the cup game the duel between Bayern and Freiburg continues, albeit in Breisgau. But not new. This constellation already existed in the spring of 2005, albeit in a different order and distribution. Both games were then played in Freiburg, first the Bundesliga game. After a 1-0 win for Bayern in the league, they beat Freiburg 7-0 in the cup.
