The end of Sandro Schwarz as coach of Hertha BSC is now officially sealed, the crisis club from the capital is back on Pal Dardai for its rescue mission. The 47-year-old Hungarian will take over from bottom of the Bundesliga table until the end of this season.
“Everyone knows my relationship with Hertha BSC, so I didn’t have to think twice when the call came,” Dardai said in a statement on Sunday. “There are still six games left, maybe two more, and I will do everything with the team to ensure that Hertha BSC stays in the Bundesliga. It won’t be an easy task, but I’m looking forward to it.”
Sky, “Bild”, “Kicker” and Sport1 had previously reported on the separation from Schwarz two days after the bitter 5-2 defeat on Friday evening at FC Schalke 04, which was bottom of the table to date. Due to the defeat, Hertha slipped to 18th place on matchday 28. The Berliners have only managed five victories under Schwarz’s leadership in the league since last summer, and the team has suffered 16 defeats.
“I liked being the coach of Hertha BSC and of course, like everyone who supports this club, I would have wished that our work had been rewarded with more points. But looking at the table, I can understand that those responsible were looking for a have decided on a new path,” said Schwarz. In addition to Schwarz, the club also ended cooperation with assistants Volkan Bulut and Daniel Fischer.
Dardai is scheduled to be reintroduced at a press conference on Monday. It is his third engagement as head coach at Hertha. In November 2021, he was released from the management by Fredi Bobic. Bobic later hired Schwarz, but had to leave Hertha himself in January of this year.
Dardai is the record player in Berlin, he had already coached Hertha from 2015 to 2019 and had become the savior in the second half of 2021 when he managed to stay up with Hertha. “Pal has already shown twice that he can stabilize a team and lead them out of such situations with his clear manner and his plan. We are convinced of that now,” said Weber.
Hertha is currently in last place with 22 points, with Schalke and VfB Stuttgart two points ahead. On Saturday, the Berliners will receive SV Werder Bremen in the Olympic Stadium – with Dardai on the bench.
