So like, there was this dude who apparently decided to go all crazy and start shooting at the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood, causing injuries to two employees, according to the authorities. The Inglewood Police Department got a call about a shooting going down at 8911 Aviation Blvd. around 3:39 p.m. Two women were rushed to a trauma center in Long Beach in critical condition, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the L.A. County Fire Department. Mayor James T. Butts Jr. of Inglewood spilled the tea that a male suspect was nabbed in Koreatown around 5:45 p.m. by the Los Angeles Police Department after getting a hot tip from the Inglewood police about the suspect’s license plate and whip. The suspect, whose name hasn’t been dropped yet, is said to be a former employee, Butts claimed. The dude supposedly rocked a security guard-esque outfit and was packing a rifle, he added. The two women were on the college payroll, but the deets about what went down leading up to the shooting are still a bit fuzzy. “The crime motive was work-related,” spilled Butts, a 19-year vet of the Inglewood Police Department. “It wasn’t just a random act of violence.” They found a 9mm shell casing on campus to back up the story, he mentioned.
These kinds of situations can really shake a community up because it’s like, it makes everyone feel like safety is just a roll of the dice, you know? Butts expressed, “This is a college campus; you see no reason that there would be this type of crime at school.” The cops did a sweep of the campus for over an hour, checking every nook and cranny for the suspect or any other potential victims, but came up empty, officials said. The campus was finally given the all-clear by Inglewood police around 5:15 p.m. One student spilled the tea to ABC7 News that they were holed up inside a campus building for a good 90 minutes, waiting for the all-clear. “Everybody kind of got terrified at once and I just feel like we really couldn’t panic,” the student shared. “We really had to just kind of stay cool and the police were here to do their job and we just didn’t want to intervene, so I hope everybody that was involved is safe.”
Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology’s Inglewood campus is all about training peeps in aviation maintenance. It’s like a mile away from LAX and offers a diploma in 18 months and an associate degree in 22 months to teach students how to fix and overhaul aircraft components and systems to get ready for those Federal Aviation Authority exams. Campus Prez Christopher Becker mentioned to ABC7 that they take safety super seriously, with 24/7 security, regular safety, fire, and earthquake drills. “We’re an aviation school, so safety is one of the things that we focus on the most,” Becker said. “It’s a nice community of students and teachers and staff. We all get along really well, care about one another deeply and so this is hard on all of us.”
The incident at the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Inglewood has left the community shaken and searching for answers. The authorities are working hard to piece together what happened and ensure the safety of everyone involved. As more information comes to light, the hope is that steps can be taken to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.
