President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Finland for a surprise visit. Finnish President Sauli Niinistö welcomed him to Helsinki on Wednesday, according to footage from Finnish broadcaster Yle. According to the Finnish presidential office, Niinistö and Zelenskyj wanted to talk about, among other things, Ukraine’s defense against the Russian attack and Finnish support for the country.

Niinistö also invited the heads of government from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland to a meeting in Helsinki that afternoon. Selenskyj should now also take part in this. Bilateral meetings were also planned.

Zelenskyj’s visit to the Finnish capital was kept secret until shortly before his arrival at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. He last met Niinistö in January when the Finnish President was visiting Kiev.

The Nordic countries have consistently provided military and financial assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022. Denmark only announced on Tuesday that it would provide the country with another military donation package worth 1.7 billion Danish kroner (around 228 million euros). It is intended to help Ukraine in its expected spring offensive to recapture Russian-occupied territories.
