The climate protection group Extinction Rebellion has called on the federal government to do more to combat species extinction. Several people dressed in animal costumes gathered in Berlin Central Station for a flash mob.
A banner read “Species Conservation Immediate Program!”. A later demonstration, which was supported by the organizations BUND and Greenpeace, among others, drew attention to the topic.
“Mass extinction and the overexploitation of seas, soil and forests threaten the nutrition and health of billions of people on earth,” Extinction Rebellion said in its statement. The group called for a “biodiversity emergency” to be declared. In addition, a phase-out of pesticides by 2030 and a council with citizens on the subject of species protection are needed.
