After a wild heatwave that had everyone sweating buckets over the weekend, a thick marine layer is rolling in to cool things down in Southern California. The National Weather Service predicts a drop of more than 20 degrees by Monday, meaning that instead of melting in triple digit temps, beach dwellers will be chilling in the mid-60s, while valley folks can expect a balmy 70 degrees.
The marine layer isn’t just here to play games – it’s coming in hot (or rather, cold) with some light rain and low clouds. Get ready for some drizzle on Monday night, all the way from the coast to the San Gabriel Mountains. Joe Sirard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, warns that Tuesday will definitely have that classic ‘May gray’ vibe. You might wake up to some damp surroundings, wet cars, and even a bit of drizzle during your morning commute. Ain’t that just peachy?
But hey, it’s not all gloom and doom. Sirard mentions that temperatures will inch up a bit on Wednesday and Thursday. So, maybe we can finally start saying goodbye to this rollercoaster of a weather week. No more surprise heatwaves on the horizon (thank goodness).
The cooler weather couldn’t have come soon enough. This past Saturday, temperatures shot up like a rocket, breaking all kinds of records and sending hikers running for cover. Over two dozen people had to be rescued from hiking trails due to dehydration and other heat-related issues. Orange County and Riverside County took the brunt of it, with 15 and 9 rescues respectively. In Los Angeles, a poor hiker had to be airlifted out of the Hollywood Hills because of heat exhaustion. Yikes.
The heat on Saturday was no joke. Downtown Los Angeles hit a scorching 103 degrees, smashing the previous record of 99 degrees set back in 1988. But it wasn’t just LA feeling the burn – Woodland Hills reached a sweltering 102 degrees, Burbank sizzled at 101 degrees, and Long Beach baked at 95 degrees. It was like Mother Nature decided to turn on the oven and forget about it.
But now, we can all take a deep breath and enjoy the cooler temps rolling in. Grab a sweater, cuddle up with a warm drink, and savor this little break from the heatwave madness. Who knows when the next one will hit? It’s California, after all – the land of unpredictable weather and endless surprises.
So, let’s all just relax, take it easy, and enjoy the rain while it lasts. Because before we know it, the sun will be back with a vengeance, ready to remind us that summer is just around the corner. But for now, let’s just appreciate the cool breeze and the sound of raindrops on our windows. Ah, isn’t it nice to finally have a break from the scorching sun?
