Deadspin, a liberal website for sports, published an embarrassing “editor’s note” regarding a piece that targeted Mike McDaniel, San Francisco 49ers’ coach.

Deadspin staff writer Sean Beckwith attacked McDaniel’s offensive coordinator Saturday in a piece that had the headline “Sure, Mike McDaniel looks cool but he isn’t worthy of a coaching job yet.” He cautioned readers to “Please think before you inadvertently label another young, white man as the next top NFL coach prospect.”

Beckwith said, “Be aware of what you tweet about, people in the online world.” “Mike McDaniel is the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator. He has become a viral sensation for his ‘adorable news conferences’ that include references to Mike Jones and engaging answers. He ticks all the boxes to become the next young, trendy, white man to take over as head coach before any of the deserving Black candidates.”

DEADSPIN REFERRED TO ESPN’S SAGESTEELE AS “THE BLACK CANDACE OOWENS.” DELETING AND REPOSTING TWEET

Beckwith snatched McDaniel’s quote: “I cannot predict the internet. “The current coaching trend leans toward young, brilliant offensive minds,’ white men like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, Kliff Kingbury, Zac Taylor Matt LaFleur Matt Rhule and Nick Sirianni. McDaniel attended Yale and makes it a strong choice for NFL teams seeking a coach.

McDaniel was repeatedly called “white” by the Deadspin staff writer, arguing that McDaniel should be considered for head coaching.

You could argue that Black candidates need to be more engaging with the media. A little charm goes a long ways. Beckwith stated that it doesn’t matter how friendly you are at a news conference. There are many problems with telling someone Black to jive for a job. McDaniel is being himself, which isn’t as fascinating as Twitter would have you believe. But being yourself should be enough for Black coaches to get a chance.

Deadspin later confirmed that McDaniel was actually biracial. After publication of this article, we discovered that 49ers OC Mike McDaniel (whom we described as a “white guy”) is actually biracial. Below is the original text of the article. “We regret the error,” reads an editor’s note at the top.

Social media critics panned Deadspin’s meaculpa.

Sarah Kelly, Sports Illustrated copy editor, reacted with “lol” “The ceiling for a story like this is already very low. But if you make a mistake in your premise, go ahead and pull it.”

“Amazing. They were like “ah, he must have been Irish, let’s go with it,” Washington Free Beacon reporter Chuck Ross tweeted.

Stephen Miller, a contributing editor to The Spectator, sarcastically praised this liberal outlet.

“Nice work @Deadspin. Below is a great example of woke media. Enjoy,” Clay Travis, founder of Outkick wrote.
