The FDP is demanding a committee of inquiry from the Bundestag to investigate the mask affair during the corona pandemic.

“After the fight against the pandemic, the time to come to terms with this must now begin, for example by setting up a parliamentary committee of inquiry in the German Bundestag,” said FDP Secretary General Bijan Djir-Sarai of the German Press Agency in Berlin. “It could help to clarify questionable mask shops.”

Members of the federal and state parliaments from the CDU and CSU were involved in the mask affair. They received a lot of money for arranging mask shops. For example, the former Bavarian Minister of Justice Alfred Sauter received around 1.2 million euros, and the then CSU member of the Bundestag Georg Nüßlein received 660,000 euros. In the summer, however, the Federal Court of Justice ruled that the accusation of bribery was not met in either case. In the Bavarian state parliament, a committee of inquiry is already dealing with the affair.

Djir-Sarai now told the dpa: “The mask deals by CSU and CDU politicians are among the political and possibly also legal low points of the corona pandemic.” The voters have a right to comprehensive information – “not only in Bavaria, but nationwide”.
