Shots were fired at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade through their city on Wednesday. According to current information, one person was killed and 22 others were injured. The team was already in the stadium at that point. Football star Travis Kelce (34), who all eyes are on not only because of his relationship with superstar Taylor Swift (34), reacted in shock.
“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that occurred today. My heart goes out to everyone who celebrated with us and those affected by it. KC, you mean the world to me,” the 34-year-old tight end wrote on X.
The Kansas City Chiefs issued a statement via social media shortly after the shooting. “We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside Union Station at the end of today’s parade and rally. Our condolences go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City,” the statement began.
The NFL team added that “all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe,” while also saying they are in close contact with law enforcement and thank first responders.
“We’re praying for Kansas City…” tweeted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (28). His wife Brittany Mahomes (28) also commented on the tragedy in her Instagram story: “Shooting is never the answer. I pray for Kansas City and America in general, this is hard.”
“I’m very embarrassed and very disappointed, the Super Bowl win will never be the same again, it’s devastating,” she added in another Instagram Story post. “Lives lost and people injured during what was supposed to be a celebration. Horrific and traumatizing. So many prayers go out to the families affected.”
“Please join me in prayer for all victims of this heinous act,” Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill, 28, wrote on X. “Pray that doctors and first responders have steady hands and that everyone receives complete healing.”
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed during a second news conference Wednesday that one person was killed and 22 were injured following the shooting at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., People magazine reports. At this time, authorities were still in the process of determining the total number of victims and identifying the deceased victim.
“Three individuals have been arrested and are being investigated for today’s incident,” Graves said. “We don’t have a motive at the moment.” And he added: “I am angry about what happened today. The people who came to this celebration could expect a safe environment.”
The parade shooting also coincided with the sixth anniversary of the Parkland school shooting in Florida on February 14, 2018, which left 17 people dead.
“I just got home from the cemetery where I spent Valentine’s Day with my daughter, who was shot six years ago,” wrote Fred Guttenberg, parent of Parkland victim Jaime Guttenberg, on X. “It’s devastating to deal with this “We don’t have to accept this as the price of living in America.”
Before the parade, there was speculation about whether Taylor Swift would accompany her boyfriend at the celebration. The musician was already in Australia at the time of the incident to continue her tour.
