Prince Andrew and his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, are said to have shared a close bond. Both differed fundamentally: On the one hand he stood, the always confident prince. On the other hand the very wise queen, thoughtful in her decisions. Especially when it comes to the public, the Queen has repeatedly proven that she had a sure instinct. While Andrew was acting more like the elephant in the china shop.

The best example of this is Andrew’s disastrous BBC “Newsnight” interview. In it, he spoke to journalist Emily Maitlis in November 2019 about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations against himself. For 45 minutes, Andrew talked his head and neck, tangled in contradictions and portrayed the privileged man that nothing can bring down.

There were no two opinions after the interview was broadcast: Prince Andrew was the loser and became the personified PR disaster for the palace. One who foresaw this was his mother, the Queen, of all people. In a new documentary quoted by the Daily Mail, journalist Maitlis says the Queen’s negative effects “dawned” “before it dawned on him [Andrew]”. In the run-up to the broadcast, the queen received a transcript of the interview and apparently immediately realized the impact the TV special would have on her son.

Andrew, on the other hand, was not aware of any mistake on his part, Maitlis said. “I know Prince Andrew was happy with the interview because he kept chatting. He seemed very happy,” she said after the two finished speaking. After the conversation, she felt the need to be alone. “I needed the space to process what had just happened,” she said.

Shortly after the interview aired, Andrew stepped down from his royal duties. Did he understand at the time why he had arrived so badly? Only he can answer that question himself.
